on chromatica

recently there was a discussion on /r/popheads about which pop artists had regressed. and as much as i love her, my first thought was lady gaga, whose album chromatica just felt like a rehash of what we had heard before, but worse. i really like 9/11 and rain on me, but you can't deny that stupid love just felt weak when her most famous song from 10 years prior was already about a [negative] [affection].

that being said, dawn of chromatica is one of my favorite albums of all time even as someone who doesn't care for hyperpop. it's a safe midground between stuff that's super intense and absurd and stuff that's just regular old pop music. i love the remix of sine from above and fun tonight but really the whole album is so good. however, i don't think gaga herself really had anything to do with the direction of this album since she wasn't involved in the promotion at all outside of tweeting that big chungus picture. it's not really to do with her own artistry as much as it is to do with bloodpop wanting to include the entire hyperpop sonical universe on the tracks.

well, when i say gaga's regressed in her main line of pop music, it's not really a negative thing. it just is. she released the jazz collaboration album love for sale in 2021 and is now focused on her acting career and i'm not mad about it since she's already given the world so many bops. i don't care if she's gotten worse, and i don't think she cares either.
