digital printmaking tutorial

attended a foam printmaking workshop by katie blundell at studio one toi tū last week. it was really cool!

i didn't realize it was possible to wash off excess ink before putting it through the print roller, so my final image became smudged. when i got home, i tried repeating the process digitally. full process and video below.

process

1. sketch

sketch out your design. since it's digital, you can invert your colors later, so just draw the image as you usually would.

2. etch

invert your sketch layer (including the background) and set it to a low opacity.

create a new layer and use a textured ink brush to loosely fill in the black parts (this will become white later).

3. fill

create a selection of the inked layer (select alpha) and invert the selection. hide both existing layers. create a new layer and use a textured paint brush to fill in the color.

you can vary the texture by adjusting how hard you press down with your pen. to recreate the 'surprise' of traditional printmaking, try creating multiple layers and filling in the colors on each layer before you separate them to check how it looks.

the event i went to was actually a queer self-portrait workshop but i hate drawing genuine interpretations of myself so i printed a teddy bear. i usually draw myself as a wolf though.

video

i'll replace this with a youtube video in 2027.
